Journal entry July 25, 1988
...This was the third leg of my flight, having flown from Los Angeles to NYC and then to Frankfurt, where I had a 10 hour layover. I had obtained a window seat with an unobstructed view in the rear of the plane near 2 siblings - a girl 16 and a boy 14 - who were returning to Capetown with their parents after a visit to Holland. They were so much fun to talk to - very polite and not at all shy. The most spectacular part of this flight was the sunrise which Phill had told me I would see. I had an added bonus of seeing three monstrous thunderheads (each bigger and closer than the one preceding it) protruding above the rest of the clouds. We were flying at 35,000' and they were at eye level . A spectacular lightning display was going on in and around these thunderheads. This, combined with the first light of dawn, was like watching the creation itself taking place somewhere above Africa. Another advantage of being on the east side of the plane heading south was my ringside seat for a perfect view of the Southern Cross, which until now I had never before seen. A few hours later we landed and after going through passport check and getting my luggage I found my Phill. At long last!
Tomorrow - "Is the Missy going to get up?"
