It was not a dark and stormy night...in fact it was a clear summer night. Summer of 1991. Simi Valley, California. I am not given to seeing things that are not there. I know what I saw.
The story was to be continued later as we were returning home, having dropped Liz's friend off at her house. We saw an object very nearby (possibly two blocks from where we were turning the corner) hovering in the sky at a very low altitude. Low enough that as we drove closer we could see in detail the bottom of its fairly sizable dark disc shape and the white lights that were in a circular pattern somewhat smaller than the diameter of the disc itself. Either the disc was rotating in place in a circle or the lights were blinking in rotation making it appear that the disc was rotating. The unusual sight frightened both of us and while both of us were yelling and screaming, I (in my usual calm and collected manner) floored the gas pedal, bottoming out the car when I hit a low spot in the road as I drove. We fairly flew the remaining 2 short blocks to our house and came to a screeching halt in our driveway. Our neighbors were jumping up and down to get our attention and pointing excitedly at the object which we had seen. After turning off the engine and getting out of the car we discovered that the object was making no sound whatsoever, such as you might hear if a helicopter were hovering or an airplane or any kind of flying machine, be it blimp or otherwise. It was certainly close enough that we should have been able to hear it were it making any noise.
After a few minutes the object began moving away - again silently - and as it did so I could see that a shaft of light was being emitted from the center of the top of the disc in a straight line upward - giving it the look of either a lighted antenna or a shaft of light. Over several minutes it slowly moved away, directly out into space, until it became a small pinpoint of light that eventually disappeared completely.
The object was not only seen by myself and my daughter and our next door neighbors, but we later learned that several other friends in Simi Valley had seen the same object that night. The local newspaper had an article about someone who had reported seeing similar objects on a previous night. My daughter called our local newspaper to report what we had seen and it was published as she reported it to them. Since the article quoted her name she received several phone calls from complete strangers who found our name in the phone book and called to report that they also had seen a similar object.
Thus began an almost nightly ritual, in which those of us in the neighborhood who had seen it would lay out a few blankets on our driveway to watch for the return of the UFO's, bowls of popcorn in hand. Might as well make a party of it if we're to be attacked by aliens.
Of curious note is the fact that our neighbor tried to photograph the object. I say 'tried' because the disc itself does not appear in the photograph. Only a squiggly light appears such as one might see when waving a sparkler in the air on the 4th of July.
I don't pretend to know what this was - or where it came from - or why it was here - nor do I enthusiastically share this story with every Tom, Dick and Harry that I come in contact with. But for the two people who follow my blog and just for the record, I did see what I have said I saw. And so did they. The truth is out there...

What fun...UFO watching in the summertime. Such memories. Sigh.
Here are some reports of other sightings around the same time and place.

I'm very disappointed that I was at summer camp and missed it all. And that I didn't get a job at Rocketdyne and get to the bottom of the mystery.
Very interesting, Bill. Thanks for the link. I hadn't considered a Rocketdyne connection prior to reading this. I wish you had been there too. All I can say is keep your eye on the skies.
